By the 1950s, White & Newton had become a nationwide manufacturer of contemporary modern furniture. White and Newton’s designs during the mid-20th century were on the cutting edge of furniture design due to the employment of talented design directors. British designer Arthur Edwards created many memorable modern designs before Philip Hussey took over. Both designers focused on work defined by clean lines and considered geometric forms. Each design is named after one of the small towns that surround Portsmouth. The company generally favoured teak but occasionally embraced more exotic, luxurious timbers such as rosewood for its high-end ranges. White and Newton’s furniture was a hit with trendsetters of the day, and today, the timeless designs remain cool and contemporary.
